ANC on GNU: No Trading Majority Rights for Transformation in South Africa (2025)

A crucial debate is unfolding in South Africa, centered around the Government of National Unity (GNU) and its role in the country's transformation. ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has stepped forward to clarify the GNU's purpose and address concerns. The GNU is not a tool for narrow ideological gains, but a vital mechanism for safeguarding South Africa's democratic future.

Mbalula emphasizes that the GNU ensures political stability, preventing anti-democratic forces from derailing progress. However, he adds a crucial caveat: the NEC maintains that transformation must not be compromised for the sake of the GNU ideal.

In a media briefing, Mbalula clarified that the GNU, formed post-2024 national elections, is not a platform to abandon progressive laws. He states, "The GNU is not a marketplace for trading or diluting the rights of the majority. It is a battleground where the ANC's strategic leadership is essential."

Mbalula reaffirms the ANC's commitment to the GNU, highlighting its role in protecting South Africa's constitutional order. He clarifies that this does not mean a merger of ideologies, but a focus on national cohesion and interest.

"The task at hand is to revisit our intent, review our progress, and chart a path forward," Mbalula explains. He adds, "Even in the face of opposition, we will march forward to ensure a fully transformed and equitable South Africa for all its citizens."

But here's where it gets controversial... Civil society groups like Solidarity have taken a stand, erecting banners that challenge the country's racial policies. Solidarity CEO Dirk Hermann explains that their aim is to "hold a mirror to South Africa's racial policy."

The banners, which read, "Welcome to the most race-regulated country in the world," have since been removed, but Solidarity is taking legal action to have them reinstated.

And this is the part most people miss... While the GNU debates transformation, its partner, the DA, is proposing a bill to scrap BEE (Black Economic Empowerment) and replace it with an "economic inclusion for all" bill. The DA's billboard campaign criticizes BEE, stating, "BEE made ANC elites rich while South Africans remain poor."

The DA's proposed amendment to the Public Procurement Amendment Act of 2024 aims to remove race-based procurement provisions and target poverty as the proxy for disadvantage. However, this proposal has been rejected by the ANC, the DA's largest coalition partner.

So, what's your take on this? Is the GNU truly a platform for transformation, or is it becoming a battleground for ideological struggles? Should the DA's proposal be considered, or is it a step backward in the fight for equity? Weigh in with your thoughts in the comments!
