B Michael, a renowned fashion designer, is taking his expertise to the classroom. The celebrated designer has been appointed as an adjunct professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), where he will be teaching a 15-week spring semester course titled 'Fashion and Art Design'.
Michael, known for his couture collections and iconic clients like Cicely Tyson and Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, has a rich history with FIT. He previously served as a guest lecturer, critic, and commencement speaker, and he himself attended FIT as a student. However, he left to pursue other design opportunities.
'FIT gave me the foundation and craftsmanship to turn my gift of design into reality,' Michael shared. 'I've been blessed to design for icons like Cicely Tyson, my muse, Cate Blanchett, Colleen Atwood, Ruth Carter, Valerie Simpson, Beyoncé, Brandy, Phylicia Rashad, Whitney Houston, ballet costumes for the Joffrey Ballet, Dr. Joyce F. Brown, socialites, and many more.'
Michael's expertise extends beyond fashion. He is also known for his work in millinery and custom couture, and he continues to design full couture collections, day and eveningwear. Additionally, he has ventured into interior design, recently handling textile interiors for couture clients in New York City.
Michael's literary pursuits are equally impressive. He plans to write a second book, a memoir, following the publication of his first book, 'Muse: Cicely Tyson and Me, a Relationship Forged in Fashion', in 2024. Last year, the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture honored him and his husband Mark-Anthony Edwards for their couture pieces worn by Cicely Tyson.
This appointment marks a significant milestone for B Michael, as he now shares his knowledge and expertise with the next generation of fashion designers. His students will undoubtedly benefit from his wealth of experience and passion for the craft.
