Baba Ramdev's Legal Battle: Supreme Court Decision on FIRs (2026)

The core issue here is that Baba Ramdev, the founder of Patanjali Ayurved, has decided to withdraw his petition in the Supreme Court concerning the clubbing of FIRs related to his remarks about allopathic medicines during the COVID-19 pandemic. But here’s where it gets interesting—this decision comes after the court was informed about the current status of investigations in different states, particularly Bihar and Chhattisgarh.

On Monday, the Supreme Court permitted Ramdev to retract his plea that aimed to consolidate multiple FIRs filed in these states. The hearing was before a bench composed of Justices MM Sundresh and Satish Chandra Sharma.

When the case was called, Ramdev’s legal team explained that, according to a report from the Chhattisgarh authorities, a closure report had already been submitted and was awaiting further action. However, they clarified that the status of the FIR in Bihar was still unknown, which complicated matters.

After considering this information, the bench signaled that it would not intervene further and decided to close the case. Justice Sundresh remarked, 'We are not inclined to interfere. We will close it.'

Following this, Ramdev’s lawyer requested permission to withdraw the petition, a request that the court granted without hesitation.

Looking back, on September 9, 2025 (note: this date appears to be a typo or error, as it’s in the future relative to the current date), the court had already been informed about the filing of a closure report in the Chhattisgarh FIR. During that earlier hearing, the judges had noted that the request to combine the FIRs was no longer relevant because only the Bihar FIR remained active.

Ramdev’s senior advocate, Siddharth Dave, had previously expressed concerns about the potential reopening of cases if a protest petition was filed, suggesting that the court should first verify the status of the Bihar FIR before making a final decision. Today, Ramdev’s counsel reiterated that the Bihar FIR’s status was still unknown, and the court appeared reluctant to interfere further.

This entire case revolves around several FIRs registered against Ramdev after a video in which he criticized contemporary medical treatments for COVID-19 went viral. His legal challenge sought either the quashing or consolidation of these FIRs, along with protection from coercive legal actions.

The case is officially titled Swami Ramdev v. Union of India & Ors., registered as Writ Petition (Criminal) No. 265 of 2021.
