The source of the conflict was Maher's criticism of Molly McNearney, Kimmel's wife and co-head writer of Jimmy Kimmel Live!. In November, McNearney shared on the We Can Do Hard Things podcast that she had lost relationships with family members who supported President Trump due to their political differences. Maher, in December, criticized McNearney's approach, suggesting that her email with 10 reasons against voting for Trump was an ultimatum that could strain relationships. He argued that such tactics don't encourage political reevaluation but rather foster resentment.
Following this, Maher acknowledged that Kimmel and McNearney were upset with him. He offered an apology, albeit more defensive than remorseful, emphasizing his disagreement with their views. Maher, known for his balanced political humor, contrasted Kimmel's left-leaning jokes, stating that he remains impartial and mocks both political extremes.
