F1 Drivers Speak Out: Charles Leclerc on Kimi Antonelli's Abuse and the Need for Action (2026)

In a passionate plea for change, Charles Leclerc has taken a stand against the abhorrent online harassment directed at Kimi Antonelli this year, asserting that Formula 1 drivers should not have to tolerate such offensive behavior.

Following the recent Qatar Grand Prix, Antonelli faced death threats online after a critical mistake allowed Lando Norris, a contender for the championship, to pass him on the penultimate lap. This misstep inadvertently benefited Norris in his quest to secure vital points in his rivalry with Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri.

In the immediate aftermath, Gianpiero Lambiase, Verstappen’s engineer, remarked that it seemed Antonelli had "simply moved aside" to let Norris through. Adding fuel to the fire, Helmut Marko, a former advisor for Red Bull Racing, suggested that the maneuver was intentional, igniting a wave of backlash. In stark contrast, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff labeled Marko's comments as "brainless," especially given the context of Antonelli receiving death threats. Following the race, Mercedes witnessed a staggering 1,100% increase in hateful and abusive remarks on their social media platforms.

After the race, Lambiase reached out to Antonelli, and Red Bull issued a statement where Marko expressed regret over his earlier remarks. Leclerc, who drives for Ferrari, firmly believes that no driver should endure such treatment from individuals who face no repercussions for their actions.

He conveyed to the media, including RacingNews365, that "it's unacceptable, and obviously, those people face no consequence for their words and for their disrespect towards drivers." He emphasized that it’s not the responsibility of the drivers to consider what consequences these individuals should face, lamenting the fact that they are all dedicated to giving their best in the sport.

"We’ve been racing since childhood, dreaming of reaching this level, and we strive to operate at our absolute limits. Mistakes are a part of racing, and in this case, the vitriol aimed at Antonelli was completely unwarranted. "

Leclerc reflected on the struggle of coping with online negativity, recalling his early years in F1 when he would occasionally check social media to gauge public opinion about him, which only added to the pressure. "Over time, you learn to deal with it, but frankly, we shouldn’t have to normalize this kind of behavior. I truly hope that one day, this issue will be addressed appropriately."

But here’s where it gets controversial: should social media platforms take more responsibility in policing such abuse? And how can the racing community unite to combat this toxicity? We’d love to hear your thoughts!
