The Return of the Glue: James Williams' Impact on Bristol Bears' Midfield
In a bold statement, Bristol Bears' head coach Adrian Lam has hailed the return of centre James Williams as the 'glue' that will hold their midfield together this season. Williams, aged 28, made a triumphant comeback from injury during Bristol's impressive 46-12 victory over Northampton Saints, a team riding high in the Prem standings.
But here's where it gets controversial... Williams' performance was nothing short of exceptional, assisting Tom Jordan for an effortless try and executing a pinpoint kick that set up the Bears' final try of the first half. This comeback game, following a pectoral injury and a broken hand last season, left Lam impressed and eager to integrate Williams into a revamped Bristol side.
"He's like the glue that holds this team together," Lam told BBC Radio Bristol. "Injuries are inevitable, but we can't let that deter us. We must focus on the next game and ensure everyone is at their best."
Despite a comfortable win against the then second-placed Saints, Lam expressed frustration at his team's performance in the second half, where they conceded two tries and were outscored by a point. However, he refused to accept that the game was already won, stating that his team needed to improve.
"It's an excuse to say the game was won at halftime. We gave away too many penalties, which allowed Northampton back into the game. But our boys showed resilience and controlled the game as if we were trailing. We just missed that conversion to win the second half, but I won't accept that as an excuse."
And this is the part most people miss... Despite the frustration, Lam highlighted a key achievement: preventing Northampton from securing a bonus point. "To deny them five points and keep them scoreless in the second half is a massive positive for us," he added.
So, what do you think? Was Lam's frustration justified, or is he being too hard on his team? Let us know in the comments!
