Public health officials have recently issued a series of updates, prompting a return to the measles exposure alert list for the Southeast region. An update on February 9th advised individuals who were at Penfor Construction in Blumenort on January 31st between 10 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. to monitor symptoms until February 22nd.
Other locations included in the alert are the Oak Bluff Recreation Club, Greenvalley Equipment in the RM of Stanley, Caisse Financial Group in Notre Dame, and Brandon Regional Health Centre. Those who visited these places should review their immunization records and ensure their measles vaccine (MMR or MMRV) is up to date.
Individuals who may have been exposed and were born in 1970 or later are advised to get vaccinated, limit contact with others, and monitor for symptoms until the date corresponding with their exposure. Symptoms typically appear within seven to 21 days after exposure. Initial symptoms may include fever, runny nose, drowsiness, irritability, and red eyes. Small white spots may also develop inside the mouth or throat. Several days after the initial symptoms, a red, blotchy rash appears on the face and spreads down the body.
Measles can lead to complications such as ear infections, diarrhea, pneumonia (lung infection), and encephalitis (brain inflammation).
It is important to note that while measles is a highly contagious disease, it can be prevented through vaccination. Public health officials emphasize the importance of staying vigilant and taking appropriate precautions to protect oneself and others from potential exposure.
