Revolutionizing Addiction Treatment: Victoria's Online Approach
In a groundbreaking development, a Victoria-based addiction treatment program is transforming the landscape of recovery by offering an innovative online alternative. This approach not only reduces costs significantly but also provides a flexible and accessible solution for those struggling with addiction.
Home Based Recovery (HBR) has been a beacon of hope for over 100 patients in the past three years, offering virtual outpatient treatment. This method empowers individuals to receive structured addiction care from the comfort of their homes, allowing them to continue working and supporting their families while on the path to recovery.
The financial burden of traditional inpatient treatment, which can cost anywhere between $35,000 and $60,000 for six to eight weeks, has been a significant barrier to recovery. Robert DeClark, the executive director of HBR, highlights the program's unique approach, stating, 'By bringing treatment into people's everyday lives, we've eliminated much of the financial strain while maintaining high clinical standards.'
HBR's comprehensive program includes a 30-day online curriculum inspired by inpatient treatment, coupled with individual therapy and long-term aftercare. Clients engage with daily psycho-educational content, grounding and meditation exercises, structured written work, and physical activities through an online platform. Each client is assigned a registered therapist and can access up to 20 individual therapy sessions during the treatment period.
The entire treatment journey spans seven months, encompassing six months of aftercare and recovery management following the initial program. DeClark emphasizes, 'By conducting recovery at home, we've eliminated substantial overhead costs and focused solely on the core program experience.'
This program is specifically designed for individuals in the early to mid-stages of substance use disorder, who may still be employed and living with their families but are beginning to face the consequences of addiction. DeClark challenges the common belief that people need to hit rock bottom before seeking help, stating, 'It's a myth that people need to hit rock bottom. Many recognize the problem early on but require more support than weekly counseling and cannot step away for inpatient treatment.'
HBR addresses a wide range of substance and behavioral addictions, including alcohol, cocaine, stimulants, opioids, and gambling. Alcohol use disorder, DeClark notes, remains the most prevalent among clients. Since its inception, approximately 70-75% of clients have successfully completed the full seven-month program, a remarkable achievement in the industry. As of the current month, 13 clients are actively enrolled.
While inpatient treatment remains essential for specific cases, particularly those requiring medical detoxification, DeClark believes that digital care plays a vital role in bridging the gap. He concludes, 'Our mission is to make high-quality treatment accessible to a broader audience. Recovery should not be contingent on one's ability to afford a life-altering break from their daily routine.'
