A Box Office Bomb and a Bitter Feud: Ruby Rose Unleashes on Sydney Sweeney Over 'Christy' Flop
The highly anticipated biopic Christy, starring Sydney Sweeney as the trailblazing boxer Christy Martin, landed with a thud at the box office, raking in a mere $1.3 million domestically on its opening weekend. But here's where it gets controversial: actor Ruby Rose isn't holding back her opinions, directly blaming Sweeney for the film's failure. In a scathing Threads post, Rose called Sweeney a "cretin" and declared, "You ruined the film."
Rose, who was originally attached to play the role of Cherry in the film, expressed deep disappointment in Sweeney's casting. "The original script was incredible, life-changing," Rose wrote. "Most of us involved were actually gay, and that authenticity was crucial. It’s part of why I stayed in acting."
Christy chronicles the life of Christy Martin, a closeted lesbian boxer who battled not only in the ring but also against an abusive marriage to her coach and her own identity struggles. Despite its powerful subject matter, the film failed to resonate with audiences.
And this is the part most people miss: Rose’s criticism goes beyond box office numbers. She argues that Sweeney’s portrayal lacks the authenticity the role demanded. "Christy deserved better," Rose stated. "None of ‘the people’ want to see someone who hates them, parading around pretending to be us."
Sweeney, however, remains unfazed. In a recent Instagram post, she expressed pride in the film, stating, "We don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact. Christy has been the most impactful project of my life."
But here's the controversial twist: Sweeney’s recent political affiliations have further polarized opinions. Following her participation in a controversial American Eagle ad campaign centered on her "good jeans," it was revealed that she registered as a Republican in Florida before the 2024 election. Prominent right-wing figures, including President Trump and Vice President JD Vance, have since voiced their support for her.
Sweeney has largely avoided discussing her political beliefs, though she told PinkNews she was "excited" for the LGBTQ+ community to see Christy, calling Martin "an unbelievable advocate for the community."
So, what do you think? Is Ruby Rose’s criticism fair, or is she overstepping? Does an actor’s personal beliefs or political affiliations impact their ability to authentically portray a character? Let us know in the comments—this debate is far from over.
