A Night of Legends—and Trump Takes the Spotlight
The Kennedy Center Honors are meant to celebrate artistic excellence, but this year, all eyes were on President Trump. From the moment the red carpet rolled out, the evening was charged with excitement, nostalgia, and a hint of controversy. But here's where it gets interesting: while the honorees dazzled, Trump’s presence and influence stole much of the limelight.
On Sunday night, the three surviving members of the iconic rock band KISS—Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, and Peter Criss—stepped onto the red carpet. Gone were their trademark face paints and flamboyant stage costumes, replaced by classic tuxedos, yet the press frenzy around them was undeniable. The air was electric with other entertainment legends present as well, including disco diva Gloria Gaynor, action star Sylvester Stallone, country music titan George Strait, and the legendary Phantom of the Opera performer Michael Crawford.
Trump’s role was historic: this was the first Kennedy Center Honors ceremony hosted by a sitting U.S. president. He had also personally been involved in selecting the honorees, breaking tradition by announcing the winners earlier in August. "This is the greatest evening at the Kennedy Center," Trump declared on stage, playfully suggesting he might even rename the venue the "Trump-Kennedy Center."
Despite the political overtones surrounding his presence, most presenters kept the focus on the honorees themselves. Sylvester Stallone was the first to be celebrated. Composer Bill Conti performed memorable pieces from the movie Rocky, and actor Kurt Russell shared humorous stories of working with Stallone on Tango and Cash, joking that "when Sly gives you a love tap, it's like a sledgehammer hitting your shoulder."
Kelsey Grammer led the tribute to Michael Crawford, noting his admiration for the Kennedy Center Honors and expressing support for Trump’s involvement in revitalizing the institution. "The word is, it was pretty much falling down," Grammer said on the red carpet. "So I’m really excited about it."
Most of the evening’s tributes avoided political commentary. Country music legend Vince Gill honored George Strait, performing the classic "Troubadour," while fellow country stars Brooks and Dunn and Miranda Lambert also paid homage. Disco queen Gloria Gaynor received a heartfelt tribute from Elle King, who performed the iconic anthem "I Will Survive," while gospel performers introduced by Montana Tucker added a spiritual dimension to the celebration.
The KISS tribute carried special emotion this year, as guitarist Ace Frehley had passed away in October. "We can mourn him, and celebrate what we accomplished," Paul Stanley told reporters on the red carpet, reflecting on more than five decades of fan devotion. Garth Brooks joined the celebration, praising the band’s timeless appeal and unforgettable signature makeup. The rock band Cheap Trick delivered a lively performance of "Rock and Roll All Nite," keeping the energy high until the night’s close.
Trump capped off the ceremony with a reminder for attendees to get home safely and coyly teased about future honorees: "I can't tell you that yet. A lot of people want to be on my list."
Throughout the evening, Trump emphasized his efforts to rejuvenate the Kennedy Center, despite ongoing scrutiny. In November, Senate Democrats launched an investigation into his management of the center, alleging "cronyism and corruption." Kennedy Center ambassador Richard Grenell publicly denied these claims, calling them false.
CBS is scheduled to broadcast the ceremony on December 23, giving viewers nationwide a chance to witness this star-studded, Trump-centered celebration of artistic achievement.
