UVA Men Set 200 Free Relay Pool Record at Cavalier Invite Day 1 Finals (2026)

Records Shattered and Freshmen Dominate: UVA Men’s Relay Makes Waves at Cavalier Invite

The 2026 Cavalier Invite kicked off with a splash, and the UVA men’s team wasted no time making history. But here’s where it gets even more impressive: a team of mostly freshmen just smashed a pool record that had stood since 2024. And this is the part most people miss—this isn’t just any record; it’s a statement that UVA’s young talent is ready to compete on a national stage.

Held from February 5th-7th, 2026, at the Aquatic and Fitness Center in Charlottesville, VA, the invite brought together some of the region’s top swimmers. Results are available on Meet Mobile under “2026 Cavalier Invite,” with detailed prelims (https://swimswam.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Cavalier-Invite-Day-1-Prelims-Results.pdf) and finals (https://swimswam.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Cavalier-Invite-Day-1-Final-Results.pdf) breakdowns for the curious.

After the UVA women’s team showcased their sprint prowess in the morning—with three swimmers breaking the 22-second barrier—the men stepped up to steal the spotlight. The quartet of Maximus Williamson (19.17), Thomas Heilman (19.03), Jack Aikins (18.86), and Noah Powers (19.10) combined for a blistering 1:16.16 in the 200 free relay. This not only shattered the previous UVA pool record of 1:16.37 from 2024 but also catapulted the Cavalier men to 10th in the nation this season. What’s truly remarkable? Three of these swimmers are freshmen, with Aikins being the sole exception.

But here’s the controversial part: UVA was the only school entered in this event, meaning they swam in relatively uncontested waters. Does this diminish their achievement? Or does it highlight their ability to perform under pressure, even without direct competition? Let us know in the comments!

The Cavaliers also fielded a ‘B’ relay, featuring a standout 19.22 split from Spencer Nicholas. Meanwhile, Noah Powers—the only swimmer from this group to compete in the morning session—secured the top seed in the 50 free with a time of 19.86. If history is any indicator, we can expect UVA’s top swimmers, both men and women, to take on more events over the next two days, though possibly in less familiar races.

The Cavalier men’s dominance continued with freshman Josh Howat claiming victory in the 50 free with a time of 19.92. Towson University also made their mark, with Teddy Ament outpacing teammate Christian Johnson in the 500 free (4:31.21 vs. 4:38.80) and Jackson Cummins setting a personal best in the 200 IM with a time of 1:53.17.

On the women’s side, the top seeds from the morning held their ground. Bryn Greenwaldt took first in the 50 free, just 0.07s shy of her lifetime best from prelims. Lily Gormsen dominated the 500 free with a time of 4:48.56, shaving two seconds off her morning lead. In the 200 IM, Emma Redman clocked in at 1:58.56, slightly off her personal best from last year’s meet.

Here’s another point of debate: While UVA’s men’s team set records, the Cavaliers opted not to enter the women’s 200 free relay, leaving the door open for William & Mary to claim victory with a time of 1:33.20. Was this a strategic decision, or a missed opportunity? Share your thoughts below!

The action heats up tomorrow with prelims in the 100 fly, 400 IM, 200 free, 100 back, and 100 breast. Will UVA’s freshmen continue to dominate, or will new contenders emerge? Stay tuned to find out.
