Driving Carbon Innovation: $6.58 Million Investment to Target Net Zero by 2050
The State Government is investing $6.58 million to accelerate the adoption of cutting-edge technologies that will enable Western Australia's heavy industry to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. This ambitious goal is a crucial step towards a sustainable future for the state.
The Carbon Innovation Grants Program (CIGP), administered by the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, is designed to support groundbreaking projects focused on carbon abatement and sequestration. By funding feasibility studies, pilot projects, and capital works, the program aims to unlock the potential of innovative solutions in the fight against climate change.
Round 2 of the CIGP will fund 10 projects, each with its own unique approach to reducing industrial emissions:
- Seaweed Biorefinery for Plastic Alternatives: This project will harness the power of seaweed to produce sustainable alternatives to traditional plastics, offering a greener path forward for the plastics industry.
- CO₂ Capture from Ammonia Production: By capturing carbon dioxide during ammonia production, this project will not only reduce emissions but also create valuable by-products, showcasing the potential for industrial processes to become more environmentally friendly.
- Hybrid Electrification of Quad Trailers: A feasibility study will explore the potential of hybrid electrification for quad trailers, aiming to reduce emissions in regional transport and improve energy efficiency.
The $15 million program, a commitment made during the 2021 election, is administered through a competitive process to foster innovation and encourage industries to embrace low-carbon technologies. These projects will not only benefit the environment but also strengthen the state's sustainability efforts and support the government's priority of decarbonizing the economy.
