The 2025 Formula 1 season brought a surprising turn of events for Esteban Ocon and the Haas team. Despite joining forces with Oliver Bearman, Ocon's performance fell short of expectations, with Bearman outshining him in both points and qualifying. This discrepancy sparked a deeper investigation into the underlying causes, leading to a candid admission from team principal Ayao Komatsu.
Komatsu openly acknowledged that Ocon's results were inconsistent, with his performance fluctuating as the season progressed. Ocon's frustration grew as his car's behavior, particularly under braking, became a persistent issue. However, Komatsu attributed part of the problem to Ocon's driving style, noting that Bearman, a rookie, had no such issues.
The team principal emphasized that Ocon's inaugural campaign at Haas did not meet the desired standards. He stated, "If you purely look at the sporting result, without going to details, for sure nobody's satisfied with Esteban's sporting result last year." This sentiment reflects the team's expectations, given Ocon's 10 years of F1 experience and his status as a race winner and podium finisher.
Komatsu highlighted the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix as a pivotal moment, where Ocon struggled on Friday, expressing his frustration to Canal+. He mentioned the instability he faced, feeling unable to drive and put together a consistent lap. This instability persisted throughout the season, with Ocon's performance falling short of the team's goals.
Despite the challenges, Ocon managed to qualify for Q3 and secured a fine seventh place in the race, starting from eighth on the grid. Komatsu attributed this to a few key factors that triggered a snowball effect, emphasizing the need for quicker resolution to harness Ocon's potential. He stated, "We've got to make sure we use that, because we really need two drivers this year."
The team's focus now shifts to addressing these issues promptly to ensure a more competitive performance in the upcoming races.
